This paper examines a range of theoretical and practical approaches to the communication and management of social change in a variety of local and global contexts. It has a particular focus on the health and well­being of communities, organisations, and other social groups, as well as emerging environmental and human rights issues, which have received increasing public attention as individuals, organisations, and governments struggle to manage scarce resources and escalating social change.

There are no tutorials for this paper. It is organised into two sessions each week, and all students are expected to attend both sessions. Each session will comprise lecture time, class discussion, and workshop­ style activities.

Students who successfully complete the course should be able to:

  • 1 :Identify, describe, and explain key dimensions of social change, especially those associated with the environment, health and well­being, and human rights issues

  • 2 :Analyse social change in a range of organisational settings; for example, government agencies, not-­for-­profit organisations, pro­-bono work, and community groups

  • 3 :Develop a range of strategies for implementing social change, including large scale public campaigns, organisational communication initiatives, and activist strategies at grassroots levels

  • 4 :Evaluate and reflect critically on communication strategies and processes in relation to social change, especially with respect to issues of participation and marginalisation
    Linked to the following assessments:
  • 5 :Build shared understanding about social change clearly, accurately, and comprehensively through dialogue, presentations, and writing
